Wytsma persuasively argues that we "fail to realize that when a tragedy such as the slave trade or segregation in the South occurs, there are long historical aftershocks." He then traces a clear and devastating line of injustice for us through the centuries which includes the Doctrine of Discovery, Jim Crow, convict leasing, voting restrictions, mass incarceration, redlining, and more - showing how all of these lead to the current disparities that continue to persist today, even despite many of the clear gains that have been made. I also appreciated his discussion of white privilege, certainly a controversial concept, but I found his balance to be helpful: "White privilege doesn't mean your life isn't hard. It means that if you are person of color, simply by virtue of that, your life might be harder." This book is an outstanding addition to the difficult conversations surrounding justice and race today.

This book changed my perspective of the problem.

The author writes in a very readable way, making concepts that may not be well known by all readers easy to understand. I am not religious but I really enjoyed this perspective on race and found it useful to further my studies in the subject. The author clearly writes also for an audience like me, and anything about religion is not taken for granted but explained as well.

Every white pastor who has struggled to understand “white privilege” should read this book. This is the kind of book that not only helped me understand my own limitations of perspective, it is also a book I could give an average church member wanting help to see outside of their own privilege to begin to try to sympathize with the oppressed in our society.

Excellent discussion on race & social justice. Ken approaches the topic with a balanced, loving and thought out perspective. He addresses God’s call to live justly and love our neighbour, who ever that may be.

I learned so much reading this book. Among other important facts, I truly had no idea of how public policy can have such an impact on our community. This is a powerful read, and I recommend it highly!!

For 20-plus years I (white) have team-taught (person of color) "Reconciliation in a Racialized Society," using many books, including Racism without Racists (Eduardo Bonilla-Silva), Uprooting Racism (Paul Kivel), One Church Many Tribes (Richard Twiss), Transcending Racial Barriers (Michael O. Emerson and George Yancey), and Reconciling All Things (Emanuel Katangole and Chris Rice). Ken Wytsma offers us Christians a book which does a wonderful job "telling it like it is." The 11 chapters are placed into three sections: The Story of Race, Equality and the Kingdom of God, and The Challenge of Privilege. If you are looking to better understand racism and the interdependence of racism and fractured faith (orthodoxy, orthopraxy and orthopathy), this is an excellent read.I offer one suggestion to make in the second edition. Native American Indians need greater space. Chapters three and four ("Stolen Labor" and "How Our Cities Got Their Shape") tell the story of black-white America. Complementary chapters entitled "Stolen Ground" and "How Reservations Got Their Location" detailing Native-white America would be a significant addition to an excellent book.This book is an excellent choice for any Sunday School class (high school through "seniors"), book club, and college-level course (where explicitly Christian perspectives are permitted and even welcome).
